I'll start by saying that everything turned out alright and Paige is healthy. That way you aren't worrying or freaking out as you read about our week. Yes, I know, I spoiled the ending ;)
Paige has been sick quite often lately... She's normally a pretty healthy girl but since January it feels like it's been one thing after another. She's had a couple ear infections, diarrhea, throwing up (Poor girl threw up on her birthday!), fever, sore throat... You name it, she's probably had it. Paige was sick for like a week and half and barely got off the couch before our eventful week. Poor girl!
Last Tuesday I took her to the doctor after noticing she had some strange bruising on the back of one of her legs and a few other spots. The doctor was concerned about her being sick so much lately and the location of the bruising. He wanted to order blood work and rule out some things..some of the scary things.. like leukemia. My world stopped the moment he said that. You don't hear much after hearing they want to test your baby for cancer. The next morning she had her blood drawn and I'm sure you can guess how that went with a 2 year old. We left there being told it would take a couple days to hear. Meanwhile, I was trying to stay positive and I never had any "bad feelings" but it's still scary, a whole new level of scary. And since she had already been throwing up and having diarrhea the poor girl just looked so sick. Which made it that much more difficult on me.
Thursday afternoon her doctor called and said the results were "all out of whack" with a few things and I needed to rush right over and get them done again. They wanted to rule out hepatitis and a few other things... her potassium and sodium levels were high and she had extra liver enzymes. I took her in and they tried getting blood but she was not having it. They poked her a couple times, made me restrain her down on a bed and eventually it ended with "you will have to take her to another office because she's a danger to us and herself" I was TICKED! My two year old is a danger to you? Wait until you see what her mom can do...
We ended up getting her blood drawn at Phoenix Children's Hospital on Friday since they are experts with kids. They rushed the labs and 4 hours later I got a call saying everything came back normal. She just had a bad virus.
I can't even begin to describe how terrifying and exhausting last week was as a mother. They tell you "we won't worry until we know something" yeah, that's like trying to tell the sun to not come out tomorrow. It's going to happen. While as hard as last week was, I'm grateful for how much it tested me and pushed me as a mother, person and a member of the church. You pray a LOT when situations like that come up. I've increased my love for my Heavenly Father. I know He was watching over my Paige. Tuesday night after we found out she would need these tests I was able to go to the Easter Pageant rehearsal. It had a new meaning and was a different experience for me this year. I'm grateful for my husband who loves me even when I'm in my "mama bear" mode like I was last week. I'm grateful for my healthy, beautiful 2 year old who makes my world go round. A few people have now told me "every mom has some story like that". My mom has one for many of her kids. I just hope this is my only "story" for both my girls. I sure am lucky to have them both.
